In 1980, against the backdrop of post-war Vietnam, my father, then thirty years old, faced a reality that many in his generation endured—extreme scarcity and limited prospects. It was during this time that he made the harrowing decision to lead our family away from our homeland. I was five at the time, one of his three children, and too young to comprehend the gravity of our situation.
My father was not just a family man but a captain of his own fishing vessel, a symbol of his perseverance and hard work. However, the stability we once knew rapidly unraveled as we clandestinely boarded our boat and left everything familiar behind. That night, as I awoke to the vastness of the open sea, a mix of fear and loss swept over me. I missed my grandmother deeply, a reminder of the life we had left.
Arriving in America marked the beginning of an entirely new chapter fraught with challenges. The transition from a boat captain to a welder and occasional dishwasher was steep, compounded by the language barrier and discrimination he faced due to his limited English. Yet, through relentless effort and resilience, my father gradually built a livelihood, transitioning from manual labor to entrepreneurship. He eventually owned a restaurant, a gas station, and several other ventures, embodying the quintessential American dream.
Reflecting on his journey, my father considers his greatest achievement to be the success and happiness of his children—us. Now, as he spends his days gardening and offering wisdom, I am planning my own venture, Century Care Services, inspired by the kind of compassionate care I wish for him. The ideal caregiver for my father would not only provide for his needs but would also respect and celebrate his rich history and the identity he cherishes—affectionately addressing him as "Captain Jimmy", recognizing the leader he has always been.
This vision is not only a tribute to my father but a commitment to all seniors to ensure they are treated with the dignity and recognition they deserve in their twilight years.
